News: "Doc" Brian D. Miller is retiring from Crosscreek in June at the conclusion of this school year. This year concludes 31 years of teaching band in Louisburg, the past eleven here at Crosscreek where he was the school's founding band director. He will continue to lead the Vance-Granville Band in Henderson and lead as Minister of Music/Organist at Louisburg Baptist Church as well as assuming a new role as the Educational Liason and Retail partner at Hill's Music Co. in Henderson.

ABOUT THE BAND

Band is an important part of the student life at Crosscreek Charter School. Currently, 85% of grades 5--8 participate in the band program.
Students begin their band studies in the 5th grade. However, if a new student enrolls at CCS in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, they may begin at the time of their CCS enrollment and work with Doc and peer tutors to get caught up with their peers.
Band is a class that takes place during the school day and does not conflict with extracurricular activities.
Band is a graded class like any other class and follows the NC Standard Course of Study for Instrumental Music.
The program is a traditional "graded" band program, following standards of music education. The 5th grade band is "Beginning band", the 6th grade is "Elementary band", the 7th grade is "Intermediate band", and the 8th grade is "Advanced band".

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

The CCS Band Director is Brian D. Miller, known locally as "Doc". Doc has been a fixture in Louisburg music education since 1995, and is now teaching the children of many of his former band students from Louisburg High School. Doc began teaching at CCS in 2015. He earned his undergraduate degree in Music Education and History from the University of North Carolina and his graduate (Masters') degree from East Carolina University. Doc also is adjunct faculty in music at Vance-Granville College, conducts the Vance-Granville Community Band, and is the Minister of Music/Organist for Louisburg Baptist Church.

The new band room under construction!

Our Band Room is a modern yet traditional band room with state-of-the art design.

The Original Band Room (Modular Unit 9) on the original CCS campus.

Band became a part of the daily curriculum at Crosscreek School when "Doc" Miller joined the faculty in 2015.

Our second band room, used for only one year while the new campus was under construction. We met in a room that was once the small cafe at Louisburg's original Wal-Mart location!

ATTIRE FOR PERFORMANCES: White shirt, black pants, black shoes, black socks. Boys will wear a black bow tie (available from Doc).

ATTENDANCE AT PERFORMANCES is REQUIRED, not OPTIONAL. However, if there is a date conflict, Doc needs a parental note at a minimum of two weeks prior to the performance date.

THE MASTERY LEVEL OF GRADING:

How much should I practice?

Practice the materials taught in class to achieve mastery of the material. It may take 10 minutes to master the materials, or it may take longer.

What is mastery?

Mastery is the ability to play the assigned material with correct notes, rhythm, tone quality, intonation, articulation, and expression.

When are my assessments?

The assessment will be announced on the chalkboard on Monday. You may take your assessment "early" on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. If you have not achieved mastery, then you may take it again on Friday. All playing tests, though, are due by Friday.

Where do I take assessments?

You have three options!

Take it during the class period.
Record yourself playing the material at home and email it to Doc at Bmiller@crosscreekcharterschool.com
Take it during a scheduled tutoring time. (See Doc to set up an appointment)

Levels of Mastery: The Mastery Scale (used school-wide at CCS)

5- Consistently masters curriculum objectives and skills independently

4- Masters curriculum objectives and skills a majority of the time independently

3- Partially mastering curriculum objectives and skills; however, dependent upon limited support

2- Having difficulty mastering curriculum objectives with support

1- Not mastering the curriculum objectives with support
